Cold Storage

The proposed site for distribution hub is located at Kepu, Tehsil Kumarsain, District Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. The site is located adjacent to National Highway 22 and is located at a strategic location between Shimla and Rampur. Due to the highway there is excellent connectivity of the site with nearby towns and marketing centres.

At most of the locations of the collection centres the promoters have their representative in the form of credit society member farmers who would be actively contributing to the collection of raw material for the main hub at Kepu.

Products/By Products

At most of the locations of the collection centres the promoters have their representative in the form of credit society member farmers who would be actively contributing to the collection of raw material for the main hub at Kepu.

The vegetables of Himachal such as capsicum are also targeted to be stored in the off season the facility would cater to fruits and vegetable from the plains to be stored for the market in Himachal Pradesh mainly in and around Shimla

Facilities with capacities to be created at each of the project locations

The main hub would comprise of CA (Controlled Atmosphere) Multi Chambers of total 6000 MT capacity. It would have a modern washing, sorting grading and packing facility of capacity 8Tons / hr to cater to the requirements.

The CA chambers would be in a multi chamber format. 30 chambers of 200MT capacity each would be provided at the main facility

The projects aims at establishing CA chamber facility while further plans including expansion of the present facility to include Ripening Chambers and a Deep freeze of suitable capacity.

Process

Cold Supply Chain aims at extending the storage period of perishable food items with the help of modern facilities. It consists of establishment of the requisite cold infrastructure from the source to the consumption centre. It would require modern technology and managerial/entrepreneurial effort to meet this requirement.

The project would source raw material (apple ) from the catchment districts located in the vicinity of Himachal Pradesh and also collect vegetables from different parts of India and stock it in the cold storage using forklift for catering the domestic market and for the utilization of people in that region. The objective for setting up the Controlled Atmosphere facility is to provide modern storage facilities to the fruit growers and traders of that region near the production area so that the quality can be maintained for longer period. To avoid wastage and reduce losses, perishables shall be transported from farmer’s field to the distribution hub in refrigerated vans.

At the distribution hub, after washing, sorting and grading, perishables shall be packed in corrugated boxes/crates etc and shall be pre cooled in cooling chambers. Then produce would be stacked in cold stores. Cold storage reduces the perishability and thereby enhances the shelf life of the produce. During off-season, when the price of the commodity jacks up, it would be sold to retailers, wholesalers, street vendors and traders etc which would fetch remunerative returns to the project. Also to provide fresh variety of vegetables to the domestic market of Himachal Pradesh
